This settlement was once the royal city of the Surakarta Hadiningrat palace, which was founded in 1745. The Surakarta Hadingrat Palace was built in 1742 by Paku Buwana II. In 1748 Paku Buwana II died, and was replaced by Paku Buwana III. During his reign, Paku Buwana III began to build a settlement area for soldiers, sentana dalem, and abdi dalem which is currently known as the Baluwarti settlement. One of the objectives of this research is to explore the concept of settlement spatial layout. By using historical studies research methods, it is known that the concept of settlement spatial layout is manunggaling kawula lan gusti. Then the exploration of the concept of spatial layout continued until today (Paku Buwana XIII era). Based on the elements of spatial layout that are still and are still being maintained, it can be concluded that the spatial concept from the time of Paku Buwana III to Paku Buwana XIII is still being maintained. The Baluwarti settlement is a cultural heritage area of ??Solo City, and at the same time is a legacy of historical value, according to the Decree of the Mayor of Surakarta Number 646/116/i/1997 concerning the Determination of Ancient Historic Buildings and Areas in the Municipality of Surakarta. In this effort to conserve settlement areas, it also faces the same problems as in other places, including the absence of a clear concept in preservation so that the local community has not carried out conservation of the area properly. So that from the results of previous research, namely the concept of spatial layout which was maintained from the beginning until now (manunggaling kawula lan Gusti), will become the basic concept in preserving the settlement area of ??Baluwarti Surakarta.
Tri Hartanto Copyright (c) 2020 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ 2020-11-28 2020-11-28 1 1 1 9 10.36728/icone.v1i1.1264 Diaspora, Cultural Heritage and Tourism http://ejournal.utp.ac.id/index.php/ICONE/article/view/1275
A new perspective on the importance of preserving cultural heritage across the world has recently been emphasized both culturally and economically to benefit human civilization going forward. One of the arms of the United Nation, UNESCO has ratified its significance through its member nations. While the benefits can be foreseen, it is certainly a challenging undertaking that requires high levels of creativity mostly out the box approaches. One obvious reason is that cultural conservation and promotion will only make sense if it is economically sound and sustains. Surakarta City, better known as Solo, is one of the centers of Javanese culture that is rich in history dated back to the ancient Javanese kingdoms. It is an attractive tourist’s destination. It has seventy historic buildings, monuments, and urban sites of cultural significance. They are arranged into six category areas or districts that are composed of traditional, colonial, and religious buildings, gates, memorials, bridges, parks, and open public spaces as listed in the Provincial Decree and are protected under Cultural Property Law. Its cultural heritage also includes important urban areas. Surakarta's physical appearance is well defined and is its tangible cultural heritage. While it is important, the wealth of knowledge and skills that are transmitted from one generation to the next play very crucial roles. Intangible cultural heritage includes oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, knowledge, and skills needed to create traditional arts and crafts. This intangible cultural heritage must be nurtured in the social and daily life of its people and interwoven into the mainstream of social groups and will determine the survival and success of cultural heritage succession.

This paper will discuss potential roles of diaspora in cultural heritage preservation, promotion, and tourism in Surakarta based on the unique characteristics of diaspora, their needs, interests, views, and economic capabilities. By understanding the nature of diaspora, their potentials can be channeled to promote and safeguard cultural heritage and empower citizens to be actively engage in sustainable economic activities. Interlocking between economic and intangible cultural heritage of Surakarta is a step forward to economic and cultural prosperity.
Herry Utomo Copyright (c) 2020 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ 2020-11-28 2020-11-28 1 1 10 12 10.36728/icone.v1i1.1275 Sustainable Design Approaches in Malaysia’s Traditional Mosques and Houses http://ejournal.utp.ac.id/index.php/ICONE/article/view/1263
The traditional Malaysian mosque and Malay house concepts have been naturally developed for hundreds of years and proven to provide sustainable solutions for building in Malaysia, a country with a hot and humid climate. However, the fast pace of modern development has negatively affected the acceptance of the traditional building concept, especially in the current development of houses and mosques. However, the success of the sustainable design approaches in the traditional Malaysian buildings to ensure sustainable development for hundreds of years has been forgotten. As a result, mainstream modern design concepts have become a contributor to deteriorating environmental conditions due to various factors, including increased energy consumption. Hence, it is crucial to understand the sustainable design approach in traditional Malaysian buildings’ design and appropriately apply it to modern building design. Therefore, this study aimed to outline sustainable approaches in traditional mosques and Malay houses in Malaysia. The methodology used in this study was a combination of literature review and site observation on the selected case studies. Six main case buildings were selected for the traditional buildings, including three case studies for the traditional house and three for traditional mosques. This study found a long list of sustainable approaches in traditional Malaysian Mosques and Malay houses. The list of the approaches can be used as an initial reference or guideline in designing new modern buildings in Malaysia, mainly buildings with passive design strategies that contribute to sustainable Malaysia.
Mohd Farid Mohamed Copyright (c) 2020 2020-11-28 2020-11-28 1 1 13 21 10.36728/icone.v1i1.1263 Reliability Evaluation Model Of Industrial Internet Of Things Systems http://ejournal.utp.ac.id/index.php/ICONE/article/view/1266
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) allows digitizing manufacturing processes and increasing the digital connectivity of smart factory and industrial systems. In addition to its advantages in minimizing the use of electrical energy, the natural ventilation system is believed could reduce the possibility of spreading the virus. One design approach to this system is by using the window's design properly. Air movement inside a building should be utilized well to allow the movement from inlet to outlet. The position of the window was one of the variables examined in this study besides the types of the window. This study found that the use of a combination of 300 awnings produced the highest airspeed in the living room (R1), while a combination of horizontal sliding windows resulted in the highest air velocity in the bedroom (R2). Still, the airspeed generated from the two combinations less than the minimum level of it is generally required, 0.75 – 0.9 m/s.
Cynthia Permata Dewi Copyright (c) 2020 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ 2020-11-28 2020-11-28 1 1 25 31 10.36728/icone.v1i1.1267 Degradation of Cultural Heritage Buildings http://ejournal.utp.ac.id/index.php/ICONE/article/view/1268
Preservation of cultural heritage buildings is an action in maintaining the sustainability of architectural diversity in Indonesia. Indonesia, which is a former colony of the European nation, certainly has cultural ties with European nations who have inhabited this country, where during these times, Europeans will experience a natural adaptation process which indirectly brings their culture into Indonesia, especially the city of Surakarta, one of which is in its architectural form. In the process of adaptation, a cultural assimilation occurred which caused European buildings in Indonesia to have different characteristics from European buildings in Europe. With the independence of the Indonesian nation, the ownership and function of these buildings were transferred, either to the Indonesian government or to private or individual property. Conservation means all the processes of looking after a place so as to retain its cultural significance. It includes maintenance and may according to circumstances include preservation, restoration, reconstruction and adaptation and will be commonly a combination of more that one of these (Burra Charter,1981). This research is designed to be used as a guide in maintaining cultural heritage buildings for the owners or users of cultural heritage buildings with European architectural characteristics, with the hope that it will help preserve the important value contained in a building and a sustainable architecture. One of the ways that old buildings can be reused is to use the adaptive-reuse concept, which is an attempt to reuse an old, unused building into a different function from the original function while maintaining the original building values. The purpose of this research is to understand how the Adaptive Reuse concept is applied in Rumah Atsiri Indonesia. Firstly, the data has been collected through literature survey and field survey. Then, analyzed the elements of Rumah Atsiri Indonesia that can be categorized as adaptive reuse examples and have been investigated in the light of the de?ned factors. At the end, according to the result we can find what kind of work that has been done in Rumah Atsiri Indonesia that makes it as a sample of adaptive reuse projects. Rumah Atsiri that we see today is the result of the revitalization of an old factory building with a touch of modern architecture. Urban tourism has unique characteristics, different from tourism in general, whose tourist attraction is intended only for those who travel. Urban tourists use urban facilities which are also used by city residents as a tourist attraction. George Town, which is located on the island of Penang, Malaysia, offers urban tourism in the form of architecture and culture of the city itself as the main attraction that is unchanged because George Town is one of UNESCO World Heritage cities that is protected by law. Urban Tourism in George Town seen from its temporary aspect is supported by various tourism events and also supporting facilities that become special interest tourism. These events, festivals and those facilities aim to enliven the town and increase the town's tourism value. Meanwhile seen from its permanent aspect, it is the city itself where the buildings are historical relics that are protected by law. So that the building will not change and its authenticity and historical value will be maintained.
